If you’re on TikTok, you’ve likely seen the viral French Onion Pasta.
After seeing multiple videos of it, I knew I had to try it.
I’m so glad I did because it’s delicious!

First I had to lighten it up to make it Weight Watchers friendly.
This recipe has all the flavors of a classic French onion soup. Let me tell you, it’s delicious!
How I lightened it up:
The first thing I did was limited the amount of butter I used. The other recipes use a few tablespoons of butter or olive oil.
Instead, I used 1 tablespoon of light butter.
Replacing the heavy cream or half and half with fat-free half and half also saved some points.
As always I used my food scale to weigh the pasta. It’s the best way to know the points are accurate.

How to make One Pot French Onion Pasta:
Start by cutting a large yellow onion into thin slices. Melt the butter in a large pot and stir in the onions.
Add some salt to the onions and give them a stir.
The onions need to cook on medium-low heat for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If the onions look like they are starting to burn you can add a little bit of water to the pan.
Caramelizing the onion is a long process but so worth it.
Deglaze the pan with the white wine and sherry. Scrape up any brown bits at the bottom of the pan.
Stir in the thyme, salt, and black pepper.
I didn’t have fresh thyme so I used dried thyme.
Add in the pasta, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce.
Bring to a boil and cook for 9 minutes. I used cavatappi noodles, they’re kind of like a swirly macaroni noodle.
I would suggest using the same noodle. Using a different noodle could change the amount of liquid needed and the cooking time.
When the cooking time is up, stir in the fat-free half and half and Parmesan cheese.
Let the pasta sit for 2-3 minutes to let the sauce thicken. The starch released from the pasta cooking will help to naturally thicken it.
This pasta dish might not be the most appetizing to look at, but what it lacks in appearance it more than makes up for in taste.
I like to serve it with a low point salad. It’s a filling and delicious meal!
