If you’re looking for a delicious and easy meal that the whole family will love, then look no further than this Chicken French Dip Sandwich recipe!
This classic sandwich takes tender, juicy chicken and pairs it with savory au jus for a mouthwatering combination that is sure to please.
And the best part? You can make it in either your Instant Pot or slow cooker for a hassle-free cooking experience.

The Chicken French Dip Sandwich is a delicious twist on the classic French Dip Sandwich. Instead of using beef, this recipe features tender, juicy chicken as the star of the show.
The chicken is cooked in a flavorful broth, giving it a savory and rich taste. The sandwich is then assembled with a bun, topped with the chicken, then cheese, put under the broiler to melt the cheese, and served alongside a dipping sauce made from the cooking liquid, known as au jus.
The combination of the tender chicken, melted cheese, and flavorful au jus creates a mouthwatering sandwich that is sure to satisfy any cravings.
Instant Pot vs. Slow Cooker
When it comes to cooking your Chicken French Dip Sandwich, you have two options: the Instant Pot or the slow cooker. Both methods have their advantages, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference and convenience.
If you’re short on time and want your sandwich ready in a flash, the Instant Pot is the way to go.
This magical appliance uses pressure cooking to cook your chicken quickly while infusing it with all the delicious flavors.
In just a fraction of the time it takes in a slow cooker, you’ll have tender, juicy chicken that’s perfect for your sandwich.
On the other hand, if you prefer the set-it-and-forget-it approach, the slow cooker is your best bet.
This method allows you to simply throw all the ingredients into the pot and let it simmer away for hours, resulting in incredibly flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth chicken.
Gathering Your Ingredients:
To make this mouthwatering Chicken French Dip Sandwich, you’ll need a few key ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to gather before getting started:
1. Chicken: I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts for this recipe since they’re 0 points. They’re tender and juicy, making them perfect for this sandwich.
2. Broth: You’ll need a flavorful broth to cook the chicken in. Chicken or vegetable broth works great, but you can also use bouillon cubes or stock if that’s what you have on hand.
3. Seasonings: I used a packet of Lipton onion soup mix which gives it so much flavor. I also added some minced garlic.
4. Bread: To keep the recipe low in WW points I used hot dog buns. They were 4 points each, but you could also use a light hot dog bun for only 2 points.
5. Cheese: Go for a low point cheese such as Sargento ultra thin provolone cheese. It’s lower in points than regular cheese, but still melty and delicious.
6. Au Jus: Don’t forget the au jus, the star dipping sauce of this sandwich! Save some of the cooking liquid from the chicken to serve as a flavorful, savory dip for your sandwich.

How to Make Chicken French Dips:
Add the chicken breast to a slow cooker or Instant Pot.
Cut the onion into slices, then add it in with the chicken.
Pour the packet of Lipton onion soup mix over the chicken. Add in the minced garlic and chicken broth.
For the Instant Pot: Place the lid on the slow cooker and lock it. Make sure the lever is set to seal, then press the manual button and set the timer for 10 minutes.
When the time is up let the pressure naturally release for 10 minutes, then release the pressure and remove the lid.
Remove the chicken from the pot and shred it. Place the chicken back in the liquid until you are ready to serve it.
For the slow cooker: Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.
When the cook time is up, remove the chicken and shred it. Place the chicken back in the liquid until you are ready to serve it.
To assemble the sandwich: Add 1/4 of the chicken to a bun. Top with a slice of cheese and place under the broiler until the cheese has melted and the bun is toasted.
Serve the sandwich with a side of au jus.
Serving Suggestions:
1. Side Dishes: Consider serving your Chicken French Dip Sandwich with some tasty side dishes. Some great options include a side of baked French fries, or some tangy coleslaw. These sides will add some variety to your meal and complement the flavors of the sandwich.
2. Pickles and Peppers: Add some tang and crunch to your sandwich by including pickles or peppers. Dill pickles or pickled jalapeños can add a burst of acidity and a hint of heat, elevating the overall flavor profile of the sandwich.
3. Soup or Salad: For a complete and well-balanced meal, pair your Chicken French Dip Sandwich with a warm bowl of soup or a refreshing salad. A bowl of tomato soup or a Caesar salad can provide a contrasting taste and texture that perfectly complements the sandwich.
