I have always liked apples, but when I was young I hated cooked apples.
That even includes apple pie! Can you imagine not liking apple pie!?
As I grew older my taste buds changed and I grew to love cooked apples. Now I’m making up for lost time.
Some other apple recipes I have made include this Apple Pie Crepe, Cinnamon Apples and Mini Apple Pies.
Now I can add this hasselback apple to the list. It’s pretty easy to make, the toughest part is waiting for the apple to finish baking.
I used a Pink Lady apple for this recipe. The first thing I did was cut the apple in half vertically, then cut out the core.
Cutting the slits in the apple is pretty easy, especially if you use wooden spoons. They helped me make sure I didn’t cut all the way through the apple.

I melted one tablespoon of butter in the microwave then added apple pie spice and artificial sweetener to the butter. I used a pastry brush to rub the butter on the apple.
You definitely want to get some of the butter mixture in the slits of the apple. It’s so good! I reserved a tiny bit of the butter for later.
You bake the apple for 20 minutes, covered. While that is baking I added a tablespoon of Quaker quick oats to the remaining butter mixture.
When the apples were done baking I took them out of the oven and uncovered them. I added the oats to both halves of the apples. Then I put the apples back in the oven for 10 minutes, uncovered.
The only points in this recipe come from the butter. Since I only used 1 tablespoon of the oats it didn’t add any additional points.
I consider this 2 servings (one half apple per serving) which is 3 Freestyle points per serving. If you eat the entire apple it would be 5 Freestyle points.
I added fat free Reddi Wip, which was 0 points. I also added one tablespoon of sugar-free caramel syrup, which added 1 point. It was definitely worth the point!

Yield: 2 Servings (1/2 apple per serving), 3 points per serving for blue, green and purple
- 1 apple (I used a Pink Lady)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon artificial sweetener
- 1/4 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 1 tablespoon Quaker quick oats
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
-
Peel the apple, then slice in half vertically. Remove the core.
-
Add slits to the apple 1/4 inch apart. Do not cut all the way through.
-
Melt butter in the microwave then add apple pie spice and artificial sweetener.
-
Spray a small baking dish with no-stick cooking spray. Place the apples in it, then brush on the butter mixture. Reserve a small amount of butter.
-
Cover the apples and bake for 20 minutes.
-
While the apples are baking add the quick oats to the leftover butter mixture. Stir to make sure butter gets on all of the oats.
-
Remove the cover from the apples and add the oats. Place back in the oven (uncovered) for 10 minutes.
-
If desired add fat free Reddi Wip (0 points for 2 tablespoons) and 1 tablespoon sugar-free caramel sauce (1 Freestyle point).
