Homemade Pumpkin Spice Apple Crisp

This Pumpkin Spice Apple Crisp is an easy fall dessert that combines two of my favorite seasonal flavors: apples and pumpkin. The warm pumpkin pie spices make the kitchen smell amazing while the apples bake into a sweet, tender filling.

The oat topping adds a delicious crunch without making the dessert overly heavy. Pumpkin puree gives the filling a creamy texture and adds another layer of fall flavor that you don’t typically get in a traditional apple crisp.

It’s also a simple dessert to make ahead for family dinners, Thanksgiving, or a cozy weekend treat. Since it’s made with everyday ingredients, you can have it ready for the oven in just a few minutes.

The Ingredients

Apples: Apples provide fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Keeping the apples as the main ingredient gives this dessert natural sweetness and plenty of fruit.

Pumpkin Puree: Pumpkin is naturally low in calories and provides fiber along with nutrients such as vitamin A. It also adds moisture and rich pumpkin flavor without needing much fat.

Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: Oats provide whole-grain carbohydrates and fiber. They also give the crisp topping its hearty texture and satisfying crunch.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds plenty of flavor without adding significant calories or sugar, making it an easy way to make a lighter dessert taste indulgent.

Swerve Brown Sugar: Swerve Brown Sugar is a brown sugar alternative that provides the rich, caramel-like flavor you’d expect from brown sugar without the added sugar.

Pumpkin Pie Spice: This blend of warming spices adds lots of fall flavor without adding fat, sugar, or calories.

Unsweetened Applesauce: Unsweetened applesauce helps keep the topping moist while allowing you to use less butter.

Lemon Juice: A small amount of lemon juice brightens the apple filling and balances the sweetness.

Vanilla Extract: Vanilla enhances the sweetness and overall flavor of the dessert without requiring additional sugar.

Light Butter: Using light butter gives the crisp topping the buttery flavor and texture you’d expect while reducing the amount of fat compared with using regular butter.

All-Purpose Flour: Flour helps thicken the pumpkin-apple filling and gives structure to the crisp topping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use canned pumpkin pie filling instead of pumpkin puree?

I recommend using 100% pumpkin puree. Pumpkin pie filling already contains sugar and spices, which can change the sweetness and consistency of the recipe.

What are the best apples to use?

I like using apples that hold their shape well when baked, such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Fuji. You can also use a combination of sweet and tart apples for more flavor.

Can I make this apple crisp ahead of time?

Yes. You can assemble the crisp several hours ahead of time and keep it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake it. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if it’s going directly from the refrigerator into the oven.

How should I store leftovers?

Cover the baking dish or transfer leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave or warm the entire dish in the oven.
