Ten Dollar Chicken and Spaghetti
Can you believe this dinner that feeds four people costs less than $10 to make!?
I’m starting a new series where I will post one recipe a week that costs $10 or less to make.
Not only is it budget friendly, but it’s also Weight Watchers friendly.

And most important (to me), it’s delicious!
The one thing I didn’t include in the price is seasonings and cooking spray. I’m assuming most people already have this in their kitchen.
If you don’t have all of the seasonings I used for this spaghetti sauce it’s ok, just use what you have.
I headed to Kroger today with a game plan. I have the Kroger app on my phone so I searched the prices before I got to the store.
Check out the video in this post to see how I shopped it and how I made it.
The Ingredients:
- Boneless, skinless chicken breast
- Crushed tomatoes
- Spaghetti (or your preferred pasta)
- Part-skim mozzarella cheese
On the app I saw that they had a 1.25 lb. package of chicken breast for only $5. Score! That was the first thing I grabbed.
After that, I headed to the pasta aisle. The Kroger brand pasta was on sale for $1, so I grabbed a box of spaghetti.
Here’s a tip if you’re following Weight Watchers, if you buy spaghetti sauce already made it has points. But if you make your own using crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce it’s 0 points. I just add seasonings to it to give it flavor.
Today, I bought crushed tomatoes. There was a name brand on sale for $1, but if it wasn’t on sale I would’ve grabbed the Kroger brand, which is always $1.
An 8 ounce block of cheese is usually $2.49, but I had a coupon for only $1.99. If I didn’t have the coupon the total still would have been under $10.
The total I spent was $9.49. That feeds four people and each serving is only 7 points.
How to Make Chicken and Spaghetti:
The first thing I wanted to get started was the spaghetti sauce. The longer it cooks, the better it tastes.
I added the crushed tomatoes to a saucepan, then seasoned it with garlic powder, onion powder, dried onion, oregano, Italian seasoning, basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring it to a simmer, cover and cook on low heat.
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. I used my food scale to weigh 8 ounces of spaghetti. Once the water was boiling I cooked the pasta according to the directions on the box.
For the chicken, I seasoned both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Spray a nonstick frying pan with cooking spray and cook the chicken for 2-3 minutes on each side.
When I flipped the chicken I topped each piece with .5 ounce of mozzarella cheese.
You can either cover the pan with a lid or place the chicken under the broiler to melt the cheese.
Plating it was as simple as dividing the pasta into four servings, topping it with sauce and a piece of chicken.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive side dish to go with it you could buy fresh broccoli and steam it. It’s the perfect 0 point side!
