This tree is the perfect dish to take to a holiday party! It’s healthy and SO CUTE!! I always get so many compliments on it. Plus it’s 0 points. It just doesn’t get any better.
The thing that gives this tree its shape is a cone-shaped piece of styrofoam. I buy mine at a local craft store. It is usually $4.99 but with a coupon, you can get it for less than $2.00.
The size of my cone was 3-7/8 x 11-7/8 in. I pulled the wrapper off then I wrapped it in aluminum foil. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to eat my fruit off of styrofoam. 🙂
One thing you need to pull of this tree is a lot of toothpicks. My container had 250 toothpicks and I went through a lot of them. The first toothpick went in the top to hold up my tree topper. I used watermelon that I cut out with a star-shaped cookie cutter. You can freehand it if you want, I’m not that talented though.
Now you can decorate your tree. I used green and red grapes, blackberries and strawberries. You can use any fruit you want though. Simply put the toothpicks into the cone and add the fruit. When you decorate close to the star you’ll want to cut your toothpick in half so it doesn’t pop out the other side. I added the strawberries first since they were the biggest fruit I had. That made it easy to fill in all of the gaps with the smaller fruit. Keep layering the fruit until your tree is covered. It’s that easy!
