Air Fryer Onion Rings

These onion rings are the first thing I attempted to cook in my new air fryer!

I will say the air fryer is very easy to use. I’m excited to try more recipes in it.

It took quite a few tries for me to get these onion rings perfect. It wasn’t the air fryers fault, I wanted them to taste as close to fried onion rings as possible.

I have a baked onion ring recipe that uses panko and Italian breadcrumbs. I tried making them the same way but they didn’t turn out.

I ended up just using flour mixed with paprika, garlic powder and salt. I dipped the onion rings in an egg wash, then the flour.

The most important part was spraying the onion rings with cooking spray once I put them in the air fryer. When I didn’t use the cooking spray the onion rings were very dry.

I cooked the onion rings for 7 minutes, turning them and spraying them again half way through.

I did not overlap the onion rings in the air fryer. I ended up cooking two different batches. It was worth it to make sure each onion ring was crispy.

This is the air fryer I bought:

The recipe calls for 1/4 cup of flour, which would be 3 points. However, I only used about 3 tablespoons worth. That’s why the recipe is only 1 point per serving.

One medium sized onion gave me quite a few onion rings. It was plenty for two people to share.

You can serve the onion rings with your favorite dipping sauce. I like to use a low point ranch dressing.

I’m excited to cook a whole chicken in the air fryer. Are there any air fryer recipes you would like me to post?

Course: Appetizer, Snack
Ingredients
  • 1 medium sized yellow onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • no-stick cooking spray
Instructions
  1. Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees F.

  2. Whisk the egg and water in a small bowl.

  3. In a second small bowl add the flour, paprika, garlic powder and salt. Mix together.

  4. Cut the ends off the onion and peel. Cit into rings, about 1/2" thick.

  5. Dip the onion rings (one at a time) in the egg wash, then the flour. Then place in the air fryer. Do not overlap the onion rings, you may have to cook more than one batch.

  6. Spray the onion rings with cooking spray. Cook in the air fryer for 7 minutes, turning half way through and spraying again with cooking spray.

  7. Serve with your favorite sauce or dip, but be sure to add any extra points.
